{"id":3476,"date":"2022-08-08T11:30:38","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T11:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mywebsitesdemo.com\/VA\/afosfoundation\/?post_type=projects&#038;p=3476"},"modified":"2025-01-18T13:01:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-18T13:01:17","slug":"project-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"projects","link":"https:\/\/afos-dev.q-con.eu\/en\/projects\/project-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>Microfinance and training in the agricultural sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-column\">\n<h3>Food security through the promotion of smallholder farmers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the <em>Agriculture Project (AGRAR),<\/em> <strong>AFOS strengthens the socio-economic situation of low-income families<\/strong> and <strong>improves the performance of micro and small enterprises (MSEs)<\/strong> in rural Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Working closely with agri-oriented industries, livestock and crop farms<\/strong>, we contribute to the steady growth of the agricultural sector by training smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Lagos, the economic centre of West Africa with 26 million inhabitants, is growing by 3.5% annually, which is the size of Frankfurt. Due to the prevailing <strong>lack of infrastructure, health care and education,<\/strong> there is little prospect of secure employment, housing and basic social services. The country <strong>needs 3 million new and sustainable jobs every year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Without a perspective<\/strong> for young people, however, <strong>urbanisation, violence and migration<\/strong> &#8211; also to Europe &#8211; will increase rapidly. Already in 2022, 60% of the population were young people aged 15 to 35. This is where AFOS comes in with its project work. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-9 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-7 wp-block-column\">\n<h3>Potential of the economically active poor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture is the largest contributor to Nigeria&#8217;s GDP and employs two-thirds of the labour force. <strong>Smallholder farmers account for 90% of Nigeria&#8217;s total food production<\/strong>, yet poverty still affects most smallholder farmers in Nigeria. This is due to <strong>knowledge\/skills gaps, limited access to finance, inferior inputs, outdated farming practices<\/strong> and poor access to markets. Our project work aims to reduce these deficits. Income is to be increased and stabilised through the <strong>training of small farmers<\/strong> as well as financial and technological interventions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-8 wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/afos-dev.q-con.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AFOS-Nigeria-Schulung-Kleinbauern.jpg\" alt=\"AFOS in Nigeria: Qualification of smallholder farmers\" class=\"wp-image-5111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afos-dev.q-con.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AFOS-Nigeria-Schulung-Kleinbauern.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/afos-dev.q-con.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AFOS-Nigeria-Schulung-Kleinbauern-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/afos-dev.q-con.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AFOS-Nigeria-Schulung-Kleinbauern-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-12 wp-block-columns has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d2e6e9\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-10 wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2>What we have already achieved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We supported the <strong>establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mldc-ng.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>MLDC<\/em> training institute<\/a><\/strong> with the 8 key players in the microfinance sector in Nigeria<\/li><li>We actively supported the <strong>establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/nigerian-microfinance-platform-nmp\/?originalSubdomain=ng\">Nigerian <em>Microfinance Platform (NMP)<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which currently has 36 members and acts as the most important sector network and innovation driver.<\/li><li>Our partners have increased the number of <strong>microfinance customers<\/strong> tenfold to more than <strong>6 million<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>5 studies and 8 symposia<\/strong> were conducted on the topics of corporate governance, savings mobilisation, digitalisation, sector consolidation, agricultural finance finance and self-regulation.<\/li><li><strong>More than 300 managers and junior staff<\/strong> were trained in management methods <strong>,<\/strong> each for around 50 days<\/li><li><strong>More than 300 participants<\/strong> were trained in <strong>workshops on organizational development<\/strong> .<\/li><li>We have trained <strong>more than 2,250 smallholder farmers<\/strong>, of which more than 370 additional trainers underwent the Trainer Eligibility Qualification<\/li><li><strong>136 loan officers\/branch managers from 62 microfinance banks<\/strong> across the country have received <strong>intensive training on agricultural finance<\/strong> &#8211; This was only possible because he increased the yield of his one-hectare rice farm tenfold at the Kwali Area Council in Abuja, which he achieved by completing the AFOS training for small farmers and the subsequent training. <\/p><cite>&#8220;Before these two trainings, I produced 2-3 bags of rice per hectare, but now it&#8217;s 25 bags.&#8221;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Cecilia Omoagbor has developed her fish farm into a company with an integrated value chain. She owes this to the training she received from the AFOS Foundation. Cecilia has improved her business and with it her income and lifestyle. A qualified and practicing farmer trainer, Cecilia now trains other young fish farmers in her community and beyond. <\/p><cite>&#8220;Currently, I can successfully hatch, grow, process, package and market my products.&#8221;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-18 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-16 wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h3>What we continue to do concretely to promote the training of smallholder farmers in Nigeria and to strengthen the agricultural sector: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We <strong>promote technology-based agriculture<\/strong> for young entrepreneurs<\/li><li>We strengthen the<strong> organizational<\/strong> development of our partners by contributing to the<strong>capacity development of middle management<\/strong> in growing microfinance and agricultural companies<\/li><li>We <strong>are developing new dual training systems <\/strong>in agriculture<\/li><li>We <strong>train<\/strong> <strong>leaders in soft skills<\/strong> and provide technical support to strengthen management in the agricultural industry<\/li><li>We <strong>develop new products <\/strong>and carry out the resulting training and awareness-raising activities for the microfinance sector<\/li><li>Through training and technical assistance, we aim to <strong>accelerate the granting of loans for agricultural purposes<\/strong><\/li><li>We advise and <strong>strengthen our project partners at all levels<\/strong>, including regulation, strategy, networking and distribution, to ensure the economic sustainability of the partner institutions.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-17 wp-block-column\"
